Atamanenko Condemns Deregulation of Grain Industry

Ottawa, ON – Six Assistant Grain Commissioners of the Canada Grain Commission were cut on March 8, 2010 by the President of the Treasury Board. According to Alex Atamanenko, MP for BC Southern Interior and NDP Agriculture Critic, this is part of the overall Conservative strategy to deregulate the grain industry.

“It is no secret that this government wants to throw Canadian farmers to the mercy of the open markets. The Canadian Wheat Board is under constant threat, fruit growers are losing money and now safeguards of the Canada Grain Commission are being eroded”, said Atamanenko.

In the words of the NDP Agriculture critic, this is part of the Conservative agenda to dismantle our country.

“We have seen the Softwood sell out, we see municipal and provincial contracts being opened up to American contractors and corporate taxes again being lowered. Now they want to progressively gut any controls that exist to protect farmers who export grain. This is just another nail in the coffin of the loss of our Canadian sovereignty”, concluded the NDP MP.
